Jake the Dog

Jake the Dog

Materials:
Size 3 (3.25 mm) straight knitting needles
Size 4 (3.5 mm) double pointed needles
Yarn:  Two skeins of Vanna’s Choice yarn in Mustard
A small amount of black yarn
Tapestry Needle
Sewing needle
Black thread
Two circles of black felt 2” in diameter
Two circles of white felt 1.5” in diameter
Small oval of black felt (approx 1” across and .5” high)
Stuffing

Notes:
Inc: Knit/Purl front and back
Dec: Knit/Purl two together
When sewing together pieces, use the invisible horizontal/vertical seam methods.
I find that the cable cast on method works best for this project.

Putting the body together:

Start by stitching together the two sides of Jake’s body.  Begin at the bottom using an invisible stitch and work your way up the sides.  Once you have almost reached the top, take a break.  We are going to add the facial features.

Now, since I improvise my designs, the jowls ended up being a bit difficult to work with.  There is definitely more jowl than needed.  I started sewing the jowls to the body from the top of the jowls and working my way down until I had deemed I had reached optimal Jake jowl length.  I tucked a decent amount of the jowls up into themselves since they were a little long.  But this works out fine since his jowls need to be stuffed anyways.
Before you finish sewing the jowls up, make sure to put a little bit of stuffing in them to lift them off the face.

Next, take some of your black yarn and give your Jake a smile!

After that we want to sew on the eyes.  Cut out your circles of white and black felt.  Sew (using needle and thread) the white circles onto the black so that the tops of the circles are lined up.  Next sew the eyes onto your body.  When figuring out where to put the eyes, I like to stuff Jake to get a better idea of what he will look like filled out.  I then pin the eyes in place and take the stuffing out before sewing them on.  Try and get them as close to the jowls as you can.

Next sew on your oval of black felt for this nose.  Sew this right onto the jowls.

Go back to stitching the two sides of the Jake together, stuffing as you go. (We are going to add the legs/arms/tail/and ears onto the body after he is stuffed and sewn together).  Make sure you have stuffed him sufficiently, and then finish stitching him up, hiding the loose ends within the body.

Ears (Make one on each side of head):

With DPN, pick up 15 stitches in an oval where you want to place the ears. (I placed them directly on the side, slightly under the top of his head)

**You can choose to just knit the legs/arms/ears/tail off the body, and then sew them on afterward. I find that picking up stitches leads to a cleaner look.

R1-R6) Knit

R7) *K4, inc* three times (18 st)

R8-R12) Knit

R13) *K1, dec* six times (12 st)
R14) Knit
R15) *dec* six times  (6 st)

Thread yarn through remaining stitches and pull tight. Tie off.

Arms and Legs:

With DPN, pick up 18 stitches in an oval where you would like the legs/arms.  (I usually make it a pretty thin oval, as this allows for easy bending)

Continue in stockinet stitch until you reach the desired length.  My arms and legs are somewhere between 5 and 6 inches long.  Seeing as Jake is a magical dog, the length is up to you!
Keep track of how many rows you make on your first arm/leg so that the other will be even!

When the arms/legs are the length you want them, stuff them firmly and finish using these three rows:

R1) *K1, dec* six times (12 st)
R2)  Knit
R3) *dec* six times (6 st)

Thread yarn through stitches and pull tight.  Tie off.

Tail:

With DPN, pick up 15 stitches in an oval where you would like the tail.

R1-R5) Knit

R6) *K3, dec* three times (12 st)
R7) Knit
R8) Knit
R9) *K2, dec* three times (9 st)
R10) Knit
R11) Knit

Add a small amount of stuffing.

R12) *K1, dec* three times (6 st)
R13) *dec* three times (3 st)

Thread yarn through remaining stitches and pull tight. Tie off.

You should now have your very own Jake the Dog!

As always, writing out patterns is not one of my strengths in this process.  Please let me know if you need clarification on anything! Good luck!

Appologies

Hello readers!

I would like to apologize for my serious lack of posting recently.  I have been busy knitting, but busy with a lot of other things as well. I plan on posting my creations from the last few months very soon.

And good news to all you Adventure Time fans out there! I have finally finished my Jake pattern!  Procrastination definitely won out when it came to that pattern. :/  Anyways, I PROMISE to post the pattern in the next month.  Promise.  I am right now making a note on my calendar.  Right now!

Proof!

Tapestry Needle
2 medium sized eyes
One button
Stuffing

Notes:
Inc: Knit/Purl front and back
Dec: Knit/Purl two together
When sewing together pieces, use the invisiblehorizontal/vertical seam methods.
I find that the cable cast on method works best for this project.

Legs:
Using Black and straight needles, cast on 18 stitches
R1) Knit
R2) P1, inc, P17 (19 st)
R3) Knit
R4) P1, inc, P18 (20 st)
R5) Knit
R6) Purl
R7) Knit
R8) P1, dec, P18 (19 st)
R9) Knit
R10) P1, dec, P17 (18 st)
R11) Knit
R12) Cast off 8, P10 (10 st)
Continue in stockinet stitch for 8 more rows with Black.
Switch to Beige
Continue in stockinet stitch 30 rows
Switch to Colonial Blue
Continue in stockinet stitch 11 rows

Cut yarn and move all stitches to a stitch holder.

Make another leg, but this time read all rows backwards like so:
R1) Knit
R2) P17, inc, P1
R3) Knit
R4) P18, inc, P1
Etc...
Keep the second leg on the straight needles and do not cut the yarn.

Body:
(Continue working on the second leg)
R1) K10, Cast on 15 st, place first leg from stitch holder onto needles, K10 from first leg (thus connecting the two legs into one piece) (35 st)
Continue 14 more rows in stockinet stitch with Colonial Blue
Switch to Aqua
Continue in stockinet stitch for 35 rows
Switch to White
Continue in stockinet stitch for 5 rows
Knit (stockinet stitch) the next 19 rows using the Face template and Beige yarn.
Face Template
Continue in stockinet stitch for 6 rows with White

Ears:
(Continue working on the Body)
R1) K8, Cast off 19 st, K8
R2) P8, put the other 8 stitches onto a stitch holder
Continue in stockinet stitch for 5 more rows, then cast off.

Pick up the 8 stitches form the stitch holder.
Continue in stockinet stitch for 6 more rows, then cast off.

Repeat the Legs, Body, and Ears section once more.  Only this time, instead of working the Face Template, just work 19 rows in White.

Assembling Finn:
Begin sewing the two sides of Finn together starting at the feet.  Sew together the boot sections of his feet but don’t go much further.  If you continue to sew together the rest of his legs it will make it more difficult to sew on his socks.

Socks (Make 2):
Using the double pointed needles and White yarn, make a 5 stitch I-cord 30 rows long.
Before casting off your I-cord, first check to make sure it fits around Finn’s leg.  I stuffed Finn’s boots to make sure it was long enough before I cast off.
Once making sure the I-cord is long enough, cast off.  Sew the two ends of the I-cord together and then sew the cord onto Finn’s leg where the top of his boots meet his legs.

Next, sew together the two sides of Finn until you reach slightly above the bottom of his shorts.  At this point you want to embroider the bottom of his shorts with a chain stitch using the Colonial Blue yarn.
Continue to sew the two halves together, embroidering at the bottom of the shirt with Aqua, and at the bottom of the hat with White.  Chain stitch with White yarn along the outside of the face.
Do not start to sew together the ears or the top of the head yet.

Arms (Make 2):
With straight needles and Aqua, cast on 19 stitches
Work in stockinet stitch for 15 rows in Aqua
Switch to Beige
Continue in stockinet stitch for 35 rows

Cast off.

Sew together the two long edges of the hand, making sure to stop and chain stitch the bottom of the sleeve in Aqua along the way.  Sew the bottom of the arm together such that the seam from the long edges is in the middle bottom part of the hand (see figure on left below).  Once the bottom of the hand is sewn up, stuff the bottom of the arm.  Next sew two 1 inch sections at the bottom of the arm, such that the appearance of fingers is achieved (see figure on right below).

Stuff the rest of the arm and then sew it onto the body just slightly under the bottom of the white hat.  To do this, I first sewed the top of the arm in place using invisible horizontal seam method and then sewed the bottom on about two rows under that.  This joint should not be heavily stuffed in order to allow for more movement.

Once both arms have been sewn onto the body, add facial features.  Place the eyes where they look good to you, and then add a mouth using a basic back stitch.

Stuff the body and then continue sewing the two halves of Finn together.  Continue stuffing as you sew together the ears and top of head.  Tie off the ends and hide them inside the body.

Beartato Pattern

Materials:
Crochet Hook Size G
Main Color: TLC Essentials in Taupe (1 skein)
Secondary Color: Any black yarn of Worsted Weight (1 skein)
Tapestry Needle
Sewing Needle and black thread
Black, White, and Light Tan Felt
Stuffing
Some sort of stitch marker. I prefer to use the method found here.

Ears (Make 2):
R1: With main color, sc 6 using magic ring method
R2: sc2 in each stitch around (12 sc)
R3: [sc1, inc] 6 times (18 sc)
R4: [sc2, inc] 6 times (24 sc)
R5-R6: sc in each stitch around
R7: [sc2, dec] 6 times

Body:
R1: With main color, sc 6 using magic ring method
R2: sc2 in each stitch around (12 sc)
R3: [sc 1, inc] 6 time (18 sc)
R4: [sc 2, inc] 6 times (24 sc)
R5: [sc 3, inc] 6 times (30 sc)
R6: [sc 4, inc] 6 times (36 sc)
R7: [sc 5, inc] 6 times (42 sc)
R8: [sc 6, inc] 6 times (48 sc)
R9: [sc 7, inc] 6 times (54 sc)
R10: [sc 8, inc] 6 times (60 sc)
R11: [sc 9, inc] 6 times (66 sc)
R12: [sc 10, inc] 6 times (72 sc)
R13: [sc 11, inc] 6 times (78 sc)
R14: [sc 12, inc] 6 times (84 sc)
R15: [sc 13, inc] 6 times (90 sc)
R16-R46: sc in each stitch
At this point, you want to add the ears (folded flat) and face. Using your felt, cut out Beartato’s face pieces according to the template to the left (Please note the template is not perfect. It should be used to give you a general idea of shape and size, so edit as you see fit). Using your needle and black thread, sew on his face (order: muzzle top and bottom, nose, mouth, teeth, eyes). As far as placement is concerned, just sew things on where you think they look good. When I did it, the top of Beartato’s mouth (top of the black felt) fell between rows 30 and 31, the eyes just a row and a half above that.
R47: [sc 13, dec] 6 times (84 sc)
R48: [sc 12, dec] 6 times (78 sc)
R49: [sc 11, dec] 6 times (72 sc)
R50: [sc 10, dec] 6 times (66 sc)
R51: [sc 9, dec] 6 times (60 sc)
R52: [sc 8, dec] 6 times (54 sc)
R53: [sc 7, dec] 6 times (48 sc)
R54: [sc 6, dec] 6 times (42 sc)
R55: [sc 5, dec] 6 times (36 sc)
At this point you probably want to start stuffing your Beartato. Continue stuffing until you are satisfied over the next few rows.
R56: [sc 4, dec] 6 times (30 sc)
R57: [sc 3, dec] 6 times (24 sc)
R58: [sc 2, dec] 6 times (18 sc)
R59: [sc 1, dec] 6 times (12 sc)
R60: decrease 6 times (I find that decreasing at the end gets difficult and doesn’t look good, so just decrease enough so that the hole at the bottom can be decently sewn up)
Tie off and sew in loose ends making sure that there are no holes toward the end.

Arms (Make 2):
R1: With secondary color, sc 8 using magic ring method
R2: sc 8
Repeat Row 2 until piece is about 5 inches long.
At this point, you want to crochet the end of the arm together. To do this, squish together the end of the arm that you are working on such that there are 4 sc on one side and 4 on the other with the thread coming out of an edge. Then sc 4 on one side while also sc through the 4 on the other, closing the arm. (See picture)
Fingers:
Slip stitch into the first of the four remaining stitches.
Chain 4, turn work
Skip the last chain you made, and then sc in the first three chains
Slip stitch into the next sc on the arm (second of 4)
Repeat until you have 3 fingers.
(I know this part is kind of confusing. What you end up with is three fingers that are flat and made out of a chains and single crochet. It’s like the first row of a crocheted scarf: you chain a length, skip the last chain, and then continue to sc the rest of the length back. But in this case it is very small)

Legs (Make 2):
R1: With secondary color, ch 2 and then sc 4 times into the first chian.
R2: sc twice into each stitch (8 sc)
R3: sc 8
Continue to repeat Row 3 until the leg measures around 4 ½ inches long.
Shape the foot my sewing a bend into it at about row 5.
Attach arms and legs. I sewed the legs onto the body a little over an inch apart. I sewed the arms on at the very edges of the mouth and slightly above it.
And with that you have a Beartato! Please let me know if you run into any problems. I am still very new to pattern writing and I know how I explain some things can be confusing.

Reginald Pattern

Here is my stuffed Reginald Pattern! Enjoy!

Materials:
Crochet hook size G
Main color: Red Heart Yarn in Turqua (1 skein)
Secondary color: Red Heart Yarn in white (1 skein)
Some scrap black yarn
Tapestry Needle
A sewing needle and some black thread
A decent amount of stuffing
Two circles of black felt, with a radius of 1 in. (two inches across)

It helps to have some sort of stitch marker. I find this method works quite well.

Upper Beak:

Using secondary color, ch2, then sc4 in the first chain
R1: [sc1, inc] twice (6 sc)
R2: [sc1, inc] 3 times (9 sc)
R3: [sc2, inc] 3 times (12 sc)
R4: [sc3, inc] 3 times (15 sc)
R5: [sc4, inc] 3 times (18 sc)
R6: [sc5, inc] 3 times (21 sc)
R5: [sc6, inc] 3 times (24 sc)
R6: [sc7, inc] 3 times (27 sc)

Lower Beak:

Using secondary color, ch2, then sc4 in the first chain
R1: [sc1, inc] twice (6 sc)
R2: [sc1, inc] 3 times (9 sc)
R3: [sc2, inc] 3 times (12 sc)
R4: [sc3, inc] 3 times (15 sc)
R5: [sc4, inc] 3 times (18 sc)
R6: [sc5, inc] 3 times (21 sc)

Head:

With main color

R1: sc6 using magic ring method. Pull it tight (6 sc)
R2: sc2 in each stitch around (12 sc)
R3: [sc1, inc] 6 times (18 sc)
R4: [sc2, inc] 6 times (24 sc)
R5: [sc3, inc] 6 times (30 sc)
R6: [sc4, inc] 6 times (36 sc)
R7: [sc5, inc] 6 times (42 sc)
R8: [sc6, inc] 6 times (48 sc)
R9: [sc7, inc] 6 times (54 sc)
R10: [sc8, inc] 6 times (60 sc)
R11: [sc9, inc] 6 times (66 sc)
R12: [sc10, inc] 6 times (72 sc)
R13-R21: sc in each st around (72 sc)
R22: [sc10, dec] 6 times (66 sc)
R23: [sc9, dec] 6 times (60 sc)

At this time you want to sew on the eyes and the beak.
I sewed on the eyes with a regular needle and thread.
Make sure the upper and lower beak and sufficiently stuffed.
If needed, crochet a few more rows so that you can easily sew on the lower beak.

R24: [sc8, dec] 6 times (54 sc)
R25: [sc7, dec] 6 times (48 sc)
R26: [sc6, dec] 6 times (42 sc)
R27: [sc5, dec] 6 times (36 sc)
R28: [sc4, dec] 6 times (30 sc)
R29: [sc3, dec] 6 times (24 sc)

Stuff head as much as you can.

R30: [sc2, dec] 6 times (18 sc)
R31: [sc1, dec] 6 times (12 sc)

Add more stuffing to fill in the rest of the head

R32: [dec] 6 times (6 sc)

Finish off and then stitch up the bottom of the head.

Body:

Using main color

R1: Using Magic ring method, sc6 onto ring. Tighten the ring. Join with ss to first sc of row. (6sc)
R2: ch1, [inc] 6 times, join with ss (12 sc)
R3: ch1, [sc1, inc] 6 times, join with ss (18 sc)
R4: ch1, [sc2, inc] 6 times, join with ss (24 sc)
R5: ch1, [sc3, inc] 6 times, join with ss (30 sc)
R6: ch1, [sc4, inc] 6 times, join with ss (36 sc)
R7: ch1, [sc5, inc] 6 times, join with ss (42 sc)
R8: ch1, [sc6, inc] 6 times, join with ss (48 sc)
R9: ch1, [sc7, inc] 6 times, join with ss (54 sc)
R10: ch1, [sc8, inc] 6 times, join with ss (60 sc)
R11: ch1, [sc9, inc] 6 times, join with ss (66 sc)
R12-R14: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (66 sc)
R15: ch1, [sc9, dec] 6 times, join with ss (60 sc)
R16-R18: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (60 sc)
R19: ch1, [sc8, dec] 6 times, join with ss (54 sc)

R27: ch1, [sc5, dec] 6 times, join with ss (42 sc)
R28-R30: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (42 sc)
R31: ch1, [sc4, dec] 6 times, join with ss (35 sc)
R32-R34: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (35 sc)

Tie off.

Arms (Make two) :

Fingers-

Using main color, ch2, sc4 into first st (4 sc)
R1: ch1, [sc1, inc] two times (6 sc)
R2: ch1, [sc2, inc] two times (8 sc)
R3-R5: sc1 in each st around (8 sc)

Tie off (First two only)

Make three. Instead of tying off the third one like you did with the first two,
instead keep the thread attached. Sew together the three fingers and then
continue to crochet around. It doesn't really matter how many stitches you end
up with at this point, but you should have somewhere around 20 st. Before you
get to far along you want to stuff the very tips of the fingers. I ended up
just using the lose ends to stuff the fingertips.

Continue to sc around until you're arm is about 8 inches long (Finger tips to
end).

Legs (make two):

R1: Using secondary color, sc15 using magic ring. Tighten slightly. Join with ss. (15 sc)
(Using the magic ring in this situation may be a bit unorthodox, but I found that it worked well)
R2-R10: ch1, sc1 in each around, join with ss (15 sc)
With black:
R11: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (15 sc)
With secondary color:
R12-R18: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (15 sc)
With black:
R19: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (15 sc)
With secondary color:
R20-R26: ch1, sc1 in each st, join wtih ss (15 sc)
With black:
R27: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (15 sc)
With white:
R28-R34: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (15 sc)
R35: ch1, [sc3, dec] 3 times, join with ss (12 sc)
R36: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (12 sc)
R37: ch1, [sc3, inc] 3 times, join with ss (15 sc)
R38-R42: ch1, sc1 in each st, join with ss (15 sc)

Tie off

Stuff the feet area of the legs, then sew the stuffing in and sew the feet
into a bent position.

Sew the arms to the top of the neck.

Stuff the body firmly, then sew the heat to the top. I have the head sewn on
slightly more towards the front.

Then sew the legs onto the bottom of the body and Reginald is finished!

Now you have your very own Reginald!
